On the evidence of what happened in the opening round of the Leinster Club Junior football championship, Longford representatives St Brigid’s Killashee must be wary of the tricky test against Wicklow opponents Shillelagh/Coolboy at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this Saturday, throw-in 1.30pm.

While no problems were experienced against a poor Barrowhouse outfit from Laois, this is going to be a much tougher task against the physically strong Wicklow side who showed their pedigree to snatch a win away against a fancied Oliver Plunketts in Drogheda.

Goals proved to be a decisive factor in the 4-8 to 1-15 first round success and Shillelagh/Coolboy will be in a fairly confident frame of mind in the belief that a place in the provincial semi-final against Clann Na nGael (Meath) or Fighting Cocks (Carlow) can be achieved.

The hurt of losing the Wicklow Junior ‘A’ final for the previous two years evaporated when Shillelagh/Coolboy won the county final this season but home advantage should stand to Killashee in their quest to make further progress in the Leinster competition.

Powered by the scoring potential of their captain Dylan Farrell, who clocked up the impressive total of 2-10 against Barrowhouse, the Longford Intermediate runners-up St Brigid’s should be good enough to come out on top but are well warned.

U-21 ‘B’ Final on Sunday

The curtain is gradually coming down on the lengthy Longford GAA season and the remaining U-21 competition will come to a conclusion at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this Sunday.

A very interesting game is in prospect as Carrick Sarsfields and St Mary’s Granard battle it out for the ‘B’ championship title (2.30pm start) with both teams unbeaten on their path to the U-21 final after the group stage.

While the Carrickedmond and Legan Sarsfields amalgamation were hard pressed to overcome Colmcille by a couple of points the previous weekend, it was a lot more comfortable for Granard in their convincing 1-19 to 0-14 win over Southern Gaels (Cashel/Killashee) on Sunday last.

Prediction: St Mary’s Granard
