With a break this weekend from the football championship (no senior matches), the start of the county senior hurling competition is the main local GAA event with the usual three clubs competing for the JJ Duignan Cup.
The title holders Wolfe Tones take on Longford Slashers in the opening round at Allen Park in Newtownforbes this Saturday evening (throw-in 7pm) and it looks like a good opportunity for the sky-blues to gain revenge for the defeat against the Edgeworthstown outfit in last year’s final.
There will be a second chance for the losers who meet Clonguish Gaels in Round 2 on Sunday August 24 and the group stage will be complete when the Round 1 winners play Clonguish on Sunday September 7.
The top two teams will contest the 2025 senior hurling decider on Sunday September 28 and the generally youthful Slashers side have the potential to make amends for the bitter disappointment of losing the last three county finals.
The games between the three clubs are generally tight affairs and the same situation might materialise in the battle for this year’s title.
