On the basis that just a solitary point (0-11 to 1-7) separated the sides in the Leinster Junior Championship clash at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park at the end of April, the Longford players will be in a fairly confident frame of mind in their bid to reach the Tier 3 All-Ireland final at Croke Park.

While Louth are rightly rated as the favourites to contest the Junior title decider for the second year in succession after suffering the bitter disappointment of a narrow defeat (1-11 to 0-12) in last year's final, there is a growing belief in the Longford camp that further progress can be made.

A place in the All-Ireland final for the first since 2016 (staging a great recovery to overcome Antrim) might well be achieved in Clones this Sunday (throw-in 2pm) but it will take a tremendous display to get past Louth who won all of their four games in the group stage.

Their key players are powerful midfielder Aine Breen, lethal attackers Kate Flood and Lucy White and commanding centre-half-back Shannen McLaughlin and Louth were particularly impressive in the top of the table win (2-12 to 0-14) against Sligo in order to avoid a very strong Antrim outfit.

Full-forward Clodagh Lohan (Slashers) is clearly the most influential player on the Longford ladies team and the DCU star is capable of making a big impact along with other attackers Katie Crawford (Carrickedmond) and Kamille Burke (Clonguish).

Key midfielder Sian Gallagher (St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh) can also make her presence felt and from the same club is the manager Brian Farrell who has instilled a lot of belief into a resilient team effort as they showed in the crucial 2-6 to 1-5 win against Carlow in the group stage.

Both of the TG4 All-Ireland Junior Football Championship semi-finals are down for decision at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones on Sunday and the fixtures are as follows:

Longford v Louth, 2pm

Antrim v Sligo, 4pm

Extra-time if necessary
