Despite producing a spirited display in matching Wexford for most of the match on Saturday evening last, Longford eventually ran out of steam in the final quarter of the Tailteann Cup Round 1 clash with the wide margin of 9 points (2-24 to 1-18) separating the sides in the end.
Chadwicks Wexford Park was the venue for a most entertaining encounter and Mike Solan’s side must now fear the force of a Fermanagh outfit who are also under pressure in the aftermath of the major upset they suffered in crashing at home to inspired Carlow on a 3-18 to 2-18 scoreline in the other Group 4 fixture last weekend.
The losers at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park in the second round showdown in the Tier 2 Senior Football Championship at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday (throw-in 3pm) will be facing a fierce struggle to qualify.
Longford will hopefully give it their best shot but Fermanagh are clearly the stronger side after just missing out on promotion to Division 2 of the National League next season in finishing a point behind Clare, Kildare and Offaly.
Fermanagh then somehow managed to let victory slip from their grasp in the most unlucky loss (2-19 to 0-23) against Down in the Ulster quarter-final after blowing a commanding 7 point lead with 8 minutes of normal time remaining and will be very hard beaten if producing their true potential.
