After preparing well to compete for consolation in the All-Ireland Minor ‘C’ Championship, the Longford U-17 footballers were rewarded for their perseverance in holding out for a narrow win over Fermanagh in the preliminary quarter-final on Sunday morning.

The Roslea grounds in Fermanagh was the venue for the knockout match with Cashel player Aidan Kelly scoring the decisive only goal in the early stages of the first half in the quest for some silverware.

Kelly hit the target with seven minutes gone on the clock as Longford ended up in a fairly comfortable 1-5 to 0-3 lead at the break in a determined bid to make amends for their rather unlucky exit in the group stage of the Leinster ‘A’ Championship.

James Flynn (Clonguish) made a notable impact in the attack with a few points to his credit while also on the scoresheet for Joe Breslin’s committed side were centre-half-back and captain Billy Maguire (Slashers), Gavin Donohoe (Killoe), Cormac Mulligan (Dromard) and Jack Conlon (Sean Connolly’s).
