Longford’s chance of a serious promotion push in Division 4 of the National Football League suffered a hard hit in the unlucky defeat against Tipperary in Clonmel on Saturday last.

Manager Mike Solan watched his side blow a comfortable six-point lead after apparently taking control of the crucial Round 2 clash with a goal from Cathal McCabe in the early stages of the second half.

Spurred on by the vociferous home supporters, Tipperary staged a determined comeback to eventually come out on top by the minimum of margins (3-13 to 1-18) with Mark Russell landing a massive two-pointer winning score in stoppage time.

While the midlanders have been thrown a lifeline with London causing a big upset to defeat Wicklow in Ruislip by a couple of points, Longford are now facing the tough task of a must win match in Aughrim when their league campaign resumes on Sunday week, February 16.

The county senior footballers are also meeting Wicklow in the opening round of the Leinster Championship at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday 6 April with the winners at home to Dublin.

London 1-20 Wicklow 0-21
