St Mel’s College must be wondering how they managed to lose this game as they suffered a shattering knockout blow in the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship.
Naas CBS (Kildare) . . . 1-11 St Mel’s College . . . 0-13
The three-in-a-row title holders Naas CBS (coached by former Colmcille player Cormac Hughes) showed a lot of bottle in coming from five points down to snatch a dramatic victory with Evan Lenihan firing over a last gasp point in the third minute of stoppage time.
There was one final chance for St Mel’s in the very exciting finish to this most entertaining preliminary round clash (last 16) at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Tuesday but the difficult free taken by Paddy Mollaghan drifted off target.
Naas trailed by 0-6 to 0-2 at the break but they produced a much improved performance on the changeover to close the gap to the minimum of margins (0-8 to 0-7) midway through the second half.
It looked all over when St Mel’s regained the upper hand to shoot four points in a row - a brace from James Hagan (free and play) with Mollaghan (free) and Cormac Flynn also on the scoresheet - but the gusty Kildare outfit just refused to accept defeat.
Used to the habit of winning, Naas were thrown a lifeline with a cracking goal from full-forward Euan Cowzer in the 50th minute and outscored stunned St Mel’s 0-4 to 0-1 during the remainder of the match.
