The result of the Mullinalaghta objection to the match result controversy against Carrickedmond in the Senior Football Championship has not yet been decided as the Longford GAA Competitions Control Committee have delayed their decision until at least this Sunday.
The St Columba’s case was dealt with last night (Friday) in the Secretary’s office in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park and lasted over 3 hours in a bid to sort out the dilemma that is threatening to throw the major competition into disarray.
Representatives from both clubs involved were in attendance at the appeal hearing with St Columba’s adamant that they won the recent Group B clash at Leo Casey Park by a point, 2-12 to 2-11.
However, referee David Tiernan deemed on that dramatic evening in Ballymahon that the crunch fixture in the so called ‘group of death’ ended in a draw (2-12 to 2-12) but if the Mullinalaghta appeal is successful and they are awarded the win then Carrickedmond will be eliminated from the Connolly Cup and into a relegation play-off instead.
A counter appeal from Carrickedmond was also heard on Friday night so the entire affair is likely to drag on in the quest to break the deadlock!
Keeping a very close watch on the situation are Dromard, who agonisingly lost out on a place in the quarter-finals on the dreaded scores difference regulation but might yet end up back in the battle for the county title against the title holders Killoe!
That remains to be seen and the turmoil could delay the progress of the senior football championship with the quarter-finals scheduled to be played on Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15.
