Making good use of the stiff wind advantage in the first half to build up a comfortable six points lead at the break, Ballymahon did enough to beat Cashel in getting back on track in the Intermediate Football Championship.

In the aftermath of the disappointment of losing their opening two fixtures against Ballymore and Ardagh Moydow, this was a must win match for Philip Quinn’s charges and they duly delivered the goods to remain in contention for a place in the Hennessy Cup semi-finals.

Played at the compact Killashee grounds on Sunday, seven different Ballymahon players  got their names on the scoresheet in the first half and nothing was going right for Gary Kenny’s side who were left to rue a number of missed chances during the course of this scrappy encounter.

Cashel trailed by 0-9 to 1-0 at the break with midfielder David Sweeney shooting a spectacular goal in the 19th minute and Ballymahon were able to consolidate their tight grip on the game with the vastly experienced Emmet Finn effective in the role of the sweeper throughout the match.

A second fine strike from prominent wing back Paddy Connaughton in the early stages of the second half proved to be Ballymahon’s only score against the wind on the changeover with Cashel (minus the long term injured Andrew Farrell along with the unavailable Aidan Rowan and Conor Flood) producing a strong finish to close the gap to just two points in the finish.
