Launch of Longford Ladies Football 2024 Droplink Championships

Senior competition for the Alison Smyth Cup to commence on August 11

The launch of the Longford LGFA club championships took place at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Monday evening.

Despite the rain, the event was well attended, with representatives from clubs, county board officials and sponsors present.

Addressing the launch, Longford LGFA Chairperson Eugene Noonan thanked the sponsors for the championships.

He also thanked the clubs that attended, as well as all of the management teams at club level in the county.

He went on to thank Longford GAA  Chairperson Albert Cooney for being present.

He also thanked the Smyth and Sheridan families for the Alison Smyth Cup (Senior Championship) and Leah Sheridan Cup (Intermediate Championship).

Eugene also mentioned the media for their support, both the Longford Leader and Shannonside.

LGFA Treasurer Sandra Hogan spoke live on Shannonside, where she explained the format of the championships. 

The winners of the Senior, Intermediate and Junior ‘A’ Championships will compete in the Leinster Club championships at each level.

Meanwhile, the winners of the Junior ‘B’ Championship will progress to Junior ‘A’ grade next year.

There are five teams competing for the Alison Smyth Cup - Longford Slashers (holders), Clonguish, Carrickedmond, Killoe and St. Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh.

They will place each other once in the round-robin group stages. The Senior Championship commences on August 11th.

The final takes place on October 5th.

Four teams will compete for the Intermediate Championship title - St. Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh (holders), Killoe, Carrickedmond and Mostrim. 

The Intermediate final will also take place on October 5th.

The Junior ‘A’ Championship will be contested by Grattans, Mullinalaghta, Ballymore, Colmcille, Ballymahon/Forgney and Dromard.

The Junior ‘B’ Championship will be contested by St. Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh, Sean Connolly’s, Rathcline and St. Helen’s Drumlish/Ballinamuck.
