It has been a very successful year for Kenagh, winning both the Longford Intermediate Championship and most recently the Patsy Reilly Cup Division 2 League title triumph.
Rathkenny (Meath) . . . 3-11 Kenagh . . . 1-10
Despite leading by a point at half-time (1-6 to 1-5) against the Meath Intermediate champions Rathkenny at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday last, this Leinster Club Intermediate Football Championship quarter-final was a step too far for Eugene McCormack’s charges as they eventually lost by seven points.
During a dominant ten-minute period for Kenagh, Cormac McGann finished a low shot to the Rathkenny net in the 17th minute to put Kenagh ahead and points from Alan Jones, Darren Carberry and Keelan McGann left them leading by four points with 25 minutes gone on the clock.
However, the concession of a goal three minutes before half-time and their failure to capitalise on an extra player advantage for ten minutes of the second half after Adam Byrne was black carded, ultimately proved to be their downfall as they were outscored 2-6 to 0-4 in the second half.
Rathkenny had dispatched of the challenge of Wexford champions Naomh Eanna of Gorey with considerable ease in the first round with a 1-14 to 0-4 victory but they were given a much tougher battle by Kenagh.
