Longford Slashers, the five-in-a-row county senior ladies champions, were due to play Portlaoise away in the opening round of the Leinster Club Senior Football Championship last Sunday but the game was cancelled following a controversial clash of fixtures.
The Portlaoise Senior Ladies team made the decision to withdraw from the Leinster Senior Club Championship after the players felt that player welfare was not considered as the Portlaoise Ladies teams were due to play at Senior level and Minor level within 3 hours of each other. The Portlaoise Senior team contains six players from the Minor panel.
Their Minor team had been scheduled to take on Sarsfields at the exact same time before the Laois LGFA faced a backlash and decided to change it to 4.30pm but wouldn't change it to a different date.
In a meeting held in the Killeshin Hotel on Saturday evening, Portlaoise were out-voted 10 votes to 11 for the Minor game to remain at the same time. Previous to this, the Portlaoise Senior players had conducted their own vote with the majority of them choosing to pull out of the Leinster game against Longford Slashers with a place in the semi-final at stake against Naomh Ciaran (Offaly) on Sunday next.
