Fresh from their respective triumphs in the Droplink ladies football county finals, the attention now turns to the Leinster Club Championship for Longford Slashers and St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh.
First into action on Saturday are the Intermediate champions St Brigid's Gaels who will have home advantage against the Laois Junior little winners Crettyard with the Leinster Junior Championship opening round clash to be played at Keenan Park in Ardagh, throw-in 4pm.
After reaching a remarkable high last year on their way to winning the Leinster and All-Ireland Club Intermediate Championship titles, Longford Slashers are now competing at senior provincial level for the first time.
Providing the opposition in the opening round on Sunday are Portlaoise who reached the Leinster Club Senior Final in 2020 when they lost out to the Dublin champions Foxrock-Cabinteely on a 1-12 to 2-4 scoreline.
Unlucky losers (3-6 to 2-10) against Eadestown (Kildare) in the opening round of last year’s Leinster campaign, the two-in-a-row Laois senior champions beat St Conleth’s 1-6 to 0-7 in the recent county final and are clearly an experienced outfit who will have home advantage against Slashers, throw-in time tbc.
It would appear that the five-in-a-row Longford champions are facing a difficult task but Conor Clarke’s charges will be quietly confident of crossing the first hurdle as they embark on their adventure into bonus territory at the Portlaoise GAA grounds.
