Considered by many as the favourites to win the county title, Killoe produced a strong finish to knock Longford Slashers out of the Senior Football Championship with Luke Dempsey’s charges advancing to meet Colmcille in the semi-final on Saturday September 30.
Killoe Emmet Og . . . 1-18 Longford Slashers . . . 3-9
A surprise result had looked a possibility at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday evening last when Robbie Clarke converted a free in the 50th minute to leave Slashers leading by the minimum of margins, 2-8 to 0-13.
Emmet Og did not panic and pushed on to enjoy a decisive dominant spell that yielded 1-5 without reply. Five points in a row through Daniel Mimnagh, Shane Clarke, Gavin Farrelly, Ronan McGoldrick and Mark Hughes (free) was followed by a well struck goal from Cian Dooner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
While Killoe had established a commanding advantage, Slashers battled it out to the bitter end. After Robbie Clarke fired over another free, the towering target man Daire O’Brien planted the ball in the back of the net to close the gap to just three points but time ran out for Liam Keenan’s side.
