Longford Slashers trounced Ballymahon in McGann Park on Friday night last in terrible conditions to register their first win in the 2023 Senior Football Championship

Longford Slashers . . . 2-24  Ballymahon . . . 0-4

Slashers were left licking their wounds after a demoralising defeat against Clonguish in the opening round the previous weekend and that was compounded by the injuries to three crucial players.

The evergreen Dermot Brady missed his first championship game in this reporter’s memory due to a hamstring injury while energetic half backs Sean Clarke and Peter Lynn also missed out due to injury.

Darragh O’Connell was also due to start the game but missed out after sustaining an injury in the warm up while everyone’s thoughts are with Philip Dobson who had to be stretchered off due to what looked like a serious knee injury.

Daire O’Brien also served out his two game suspension and he will be able to return to the fold for Liam Keenan’s side in the crucial Round 3 clash against Granard at McGee Park on Saturday evening.

Ballymahon also lost two players in the warm up, defenders Sean McMullen and Harvey Townsend, while midfielder John Nevin limped off before half-time.

Ballymahon fought admirably throughout the game but Slashers ruthlessly punished the countless mistakes made by their opponents.
