After competing in the TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Championship since 2017, the Longford ladies football side are in grave danger of dropping down to the Junior grade next year.
Now under the guidance of Sean Meenaghan in a caretaker capacity after the manager Alan Mullen decided to step down in the wake of the heavy defeat against Westmeath in the group stage of the championship, Longford face Offaly in a relegation battle at the Kinnegad grounds this Saturday, throw-in 2pm.
Currently going through a transition period with a lot of promising young players graduating to the senior squad in the absence of several regulars, the County girls managed to win just a single game in their demotion from Division 3 of the National League during this torrid season and that ironically was against Offaly at Emmet Park back in February.
Longford emerged victorious on a narrow 2-10 to 1-10 scoreline and another close encounter is probably in prospect in the make or break clash in Kinnegad in the fierce scrap for survival in the Intermediate grade.
Senior Hurling Championship starts
The opening game in the group stage of the 2023 Senior Hurling Championship is scheduled for this Saturday evening when Longford Slashers take on Wolfe Tones Mostrim at Allen Park in Newtownforbes, throw-in 7pm.
The winners will meet the title holders Clonguish Gaels in Round 2 a week later and the battle for Duignan Cup glory is generally extremely competitive.
Colmcille demoted to Division 2
The major surprise in the 2023 All County Football League was the demotion of the reigning county champions Colmcille to Division 2 next season, winning just one game in the group stage, but the Mickey Harkin managed side will surely be a different proposition in the championship with their opening round fixture against Killoe on Friday July 28.
Through to the Division 1 league title decider for the Johnny Skelly Cup are Killoe and Mullinalaghta and joining them in the Leader Cup semi-finals are Longford Slashers and Clonguish.
St Columba’s confront Clonguish at The Laurels on Sunday (2pm) while Killoe will face Slashers in the other last four clash at Emmet Park on Tuesday night next (8pm).
