Longford Leader columnist Mattie Fox: The powerful grey vote lobby
At a time of universal chaos it’s a good strategy for government to mention things that might not go down too well.
Interesting that Regina Doherty announced a new strategy for social welfare payments - which would be long after time – in the midst of Brexit chaos, but first failed to clarify what the Taoiseach says about old age pensions.
Back in May 2018, the Government wanted to peg the current State Pension of €238.50 with wage level, and consumer price index. According to that scheme therefore, pensioners should be getting more money in early 2019. Soon, in fact.
Previous Governments have learned that the grey vote is one of the most powerful lobbies in the country, and usually get their way because they all belong to the committed voters lobby.
We’ll see what happens when wage levels and consumer price index outstrips the pension requirement.
It is, in fact, happening already.
