Longford Leader columnist, Mattie Fox
Ireland is the worst offender in the European Union, in terms of obeying the agreement signed by the EU on global warming.
The worst offender.
Dr Paul Deane, Senior Researcher in UCC, wrote in 2017 about Ireland’s missing climate emissions targets. Citing the crazy situation that Ireland takes advantage of, year after year, he estimated “estimated costs for purchasing compliance for these combined targets range from a total of €230 million and €610 million”. Even Dr Deane had to beware of the legal implications, when quoting a figure!
But we can safely say that Ireland will be liable to pay at least €230 million. Possibly the more accurate figure would be at least €500 million, but that’s merely speculation.
Our recent budget didn’t even bother to address the issue of global warming. Don’t the Irish politicians realise what will happen if nothing is done?
The human race will genuinely be hugely impacted, and many areas won’t see any humans living on them at all.
This is the reality of the level of emissions we are allowing to be constantly dumped in our seas, on our roads, in landfill sites, everywhere possible, lorries are carrying waste “somewhere else”.
It’s not sustainable.
About twenty years ago, a well known politician was on a flight to London and we got chatting.
He said clearly that the world as we know it couldn’t survive any longer than another one hundred years.
That is a fact, and that was twenty years ago.
