Longford #LE24: Cllr Paraic Brady delivers a knockout blow to most of his rivals

The Fine Gael candidate was one of three sitting counciillors re-elected on the first count to the Granard Municipal District on Sunday evening
He may have been elected on the first count, but it was boxing skills rather than sprinting ones which the Fine Gael councillor Paraic Brady displayed in Edgeworthstown on Sunday evening.
Having received 1,211 first preference votes, with a surplus of 26, it's fair to say he left most of his other competitors floored on the canvas.
Well - apart from Cllr Garry Murtagh, his Fine Gael colleague who topped the poll, and non-party candidate Turlough McGovern.
He duly celebrated his success by pounding a punchbag upstairs, near where the media is based.
Showing some party solidarity, Cllr Murtagh held the punch bag for him. Fine Gael look poised to deliver a knockout blow overall in Granard and are currently on course to win four out of five seats on the Granard Municipal District.
However, while Fianna Fáil appear to be on the ropes, there is some hope that first-time candidate David Cassidy might just perform a "rope-a-dope" comeback and win at the 11th hour!
