County Longford town a hive of activity and rich culture during Heritage Week

A variety of events were held which were supported by The Department of Communications, Culture & Sport and County Longford Library, Heritage.
Edgeworthstown was a hive of activity during Heritage Week which celebrates our rich and varied cultural and built heritage.
The home of celebrated literary hero Maria Edgeworth is to the forefront of these celebrations every year and this year was no exception.
With the support of The Department of Communications, Culture & Sport and County Longford Library, Heritage and Archives services several events were held throughout the week.
The celebrations started on Thursday evening in The Green with a celebration of the life and times of the blind harpist Turlough O’Carolan.
The evening, Celtic Kindness was a mix of O’Carolan’s music, storytelling and poetry.
Eileen Beamish curated the programme when she established the trio Celtic Grace. The group consists of Eileen on the traditional Celtic Harp, David Williams on the traditional wooden flute and poet and storyteller Patrick Creedon.
The Maria Edgeworth Centre who organised the event were delighted with the full house most of whom came from far and wide.
Friday evening was another wonderful evening in The Green when Pauline Flood brought together many of the young talented performers in music, storytelling and poetry.
Pauline curated the evening which she titled Roots & Rhythms.
Once again, it was standing room only where the audience was treated to a wonderful mix of traditional, contemporary music alongside poetry, storytelling and Sean-nós dancing.

The performances left no one in any doubt but that Irish traditions are in the great hands of our young generation and led by people like Pauline Flood.
The week’s celebrations concluded on Sunday afternoon with a literary stroll and afternoon tea at the Maria Edgeworth Centre.
Once again the organisers were delighted with the attendance with many traveling from Dublin and Meath to enjoy the event.
Heritage Week is very well established and is a great opportunity for The Maria Edgeworth Centre and Edgeworthstown to share its rich heritage.
Over the last few years the town has been transformed with the new library and the Maria Edgeworth Visitor Centre & Museum.
The town itself is in an immaculate state of tidiness due to the tireless work of the local TidyTowns group.
