Every year, Heritage Week offers communities the chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate the rich tapestry of our shared past.
It is a time to engage with local history, rediscover the stories that shaped us, and participate in civic life by connecting with our cultural and historical roots.

This year, the Maria Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown is proud to take part once again, offering a programme of events that not only highlight the area’s heritage but also invite the community to join in remembering, learning, and celebrating together.

At the heart of this year’s offering is a tribute to Maria Edgeworth and her remarkable family, whose contributions to literature, science, education, and public life continue to inspire.

Maria Edgeworth was a pioneering novelist and educator whose works and progressive views on gender, class, and education were well ahead of her time. Her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, was an inventor, scientist, and educational reformer who collaborated with some of the leading thinkers of the Enlightenment. Together, the Edgeworth family left an indelible mark not just on Edgeworthstown, but on Irish and European intellectual life.

Heritage Week gives us a chance not only to honour their legacy, but also to explore how their ideals still resonate today — particularly in areas like education, innovation, and community development.

There will be an open day on Friday, August 16 to explore the museum's exhibitions. The centre hopes to bring a greater connection to Edgeworth's legacy. All ages are welcome to come. On August 19, there will be a 20-minute film at 7pm in the Community Library in Edgeworthstown.
