Shocking scenes of illegal dumping are greeting visitors to one of Longford’s most popular tourist attractions, writes Aoife Carberry.

Locals in the Kenagh area have been left annoyed by the horrendous condition in which the Corlea and Ring Dong roads, located just a few hundred yards from Corlea Centre, have been left.

Clothes, school accessories, large items of furniture, mattresses and general waste have left the normally picturesque area looking unsightly, while the Canal Walk has also seen evidence of dumping, with furniture and litter lining the route.

A nearby bog pass road was also hit badly, when a large load of drinks cans and rubbish, thought to amount to over 1,000 items were abandoned on the road.

Responding to the scenes, Environmental Officer with Longford Co Council, Gary Brady revealed that he has been notified about the situation previously, and they have managed to track down one of the perpetrators.

“Investigations are underway and we will be continuing with investigations until we see what the story is,” he told the Leader, revealing that they are also looking into other locations.

“People have deposited waste in the bog and stolen turf as well,” he continued.

Determined to get to the root of the problem, Mr Brady assured that “we do know about it, and we have photos taken”, before appealing for the public’s help in catching those responsible.

Locals with any information or concerns should call 043 33 43367.
