ALONE, the organisation that enables older people to age well at home, is urgently seeking volunteers for their Support and Befriending services in Longford, particularly in the areas of Aughnacliffe, Drumlish and Moyne areas.

By the end of the year, ALONE will have supported almost 46,000 older people through its services across Ireland. With our ageing population demand for these services continue to grow. Many older people in our communities are experiencing loneliness and isolation, and with the Christmas season fast approaching, these feelings are often magnified.

Alongside loneliness, older people continue to face significant challenges related to physical health, housing, and finances. Many are coping with mobility issues, long-term health conditions, insecure or unsuitable housing, and increasing living costs. These pressures can leave people feeling overwhelmed and cut off from their communities. ALONE’s volunteers play a vital role in offering companionship, practical support, and a friendly voice to those who need it most.

Loneliness remains one of the greatest challenges facing older people in Ireland today, and in the Longford region alone, more than half of those who contacted ALONE this year reported experiencing loneliness and isolation. Sean Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, said:  "We know that loneliness can have a devastating impact on health and wellbeing. This Christmas, we are asking people to give the gift of time. Just one hour a week can make a life-changing difference for an older person. By volunteering, you are helping to build stronger, more connected communities where no one feels alone."

Volunteering involves visiting or calling an older person regularly for conversation and support, helping them stay connected and engaged in their community, and providing reassurance, friendship and practical support to reduce loneliness. Volunteering with ALONE is flexible, rewarding, and makes a real difference. Just an hour of your time each week can transform someone’s life.
