Judge Bernadette Owens was told Rasool wished to travel to the UK for a family wedding later this month and to Pakistan next month, following his November 3 court date, “to continue the wedding from London.”

Barrister for Ahsan Rasool, David Nugent BL, said there was no objection from Gardaí and that he had “canvassed the sergeant and the investigating sergeant.”

In response Judge Owens queried, “Had this man a similar application?” to which Mr Nugent confirmed he had, adding, “The state very graciously allowed him to travel.”

He continued, “There is a family wedding occurring in the UK between the 26th and 31st of October.”

“He is back in court on the 3rd of November for directions, and he is looking to travel to Pakistan to continue the family wedding from London on the 3rd to the 8th of the November.”

“He already has pre-existing permission to fly to Dubai for a trade show and then he will return to Ireland on the 16th at which point he will hand in his passport to An Garda Síochána as he did on the last occasion when he travelled.”

Sergeant for the State, Enda Daly, confirmed there was no objection to the application, but stipulated that proof of travel be provided.

Mr Nugent BL told the court that flights had not yet been booked as “we weren’t so presumptuous as to assume we would get the permission.”

Judge Owens gave consent to vary the bail conditions as per the application “subject to the production of confirmation of travel arrangements and return of passport.”
