Assault allegations to get Longford Circuit Court hearing

A defendant facing a charge of attacking and threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a woman in a public park in county Longford will have the matter dealt with in Longford Circuit Court.

Michal Godla (34) of 1 Annaly Court, Longford was handed the Book of Evidence of the case against him at last week's sitting of Longford District court. Mr Godla faces charges that on August 7, 2023 at The Mall, Longford Town he assaulted a named individual causing her harm, contrary to Section 3 of the non-fatal offences against the person act and a charge of threatening to kill the named individual intending her to believe it would be carried out.

The alleged assault on a female aged in her 50s happened at around 2:30am. The victim sustained serious facial injuries as a result of the incident and was taken to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for treatment.

Prosecuting Sergeant, Mark Mahon, said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was seeking to have Mr Godla sent forward for trial on the two charges in the Book of Evidence.

Judge Patricia Cronin heard there were no objections to bail and the defendant was sent forward for trial on conditions previously set out.

Judge Cronin issued the defendant with an alibi warning, advising him he must notify the State within 14 days if he wished to rely on an alibi in the course of his trial.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said Mr Godla is currently out of work and applied for a legal aid certificate to cover a junior and senior counsel.

Judge Cronin granted that request on the basis one of the counts in the book of evidence was a Section 5 charge of threatening to kill or cause serious harm.

Mr Godla was remanded on continuing bail, to appear back before a sitting of Longford Circuit Criminal Court on July 9.
