Scaffolding supplier scales dizzy heights

The sight of scaffolding around the spire of St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford is an indicator that work on the imposing structure is entering its final phase.

The repairs being carried out on the spire at present represent another milestone in the restoration of St Mel’s, as they’re the last major external works required before the cathedral reopens.

Local business Safeway Scaffolding Ltd supplied and erected the intricate scaffolding structure around the spire, and indeed for the rest of the restoration work, and project manager Ronan Moore is impressed with the company’s expertise.

“A lot of detailed design went into constructing it (the scaffolding),” said Mr Moore who also explained that the scaffold structure was designed in conjunction with Rainey Restoration Ltd. “GEM Joinery will use it when replacing some of the louvres, and then the stonework will be cleaned.”

Work on the spire is due to be completed within the next 11 weeks, and Mr Moore added that it is “the last major external job” to be carried out.

“This is by far the biggest restoration we’ve been involved with,” admitted Eugene McGerr of Safeway Scaffolding Ltd. “Myself and my brother Patrick started the business together, and we’ve been in business since 1999.”

Mr McGerr pointed out that the company, which is located at Kilfintan near Granard, has highly-capable staff which allows them to undertake such projects. “Kevin Brady, Brian Butler, and Kevin Duffy were our main men on this job,” he said.
