All roads will lead to Abbeylara on Sunday, June 8 next when the annual Abbeylara Field Day takes place in the village.

This year the highlight of the show will be a threshing demonstration which will be held throughout the day. Some of the oldest machines in history will be on display as the event gears up for another successful year among the picturesque hills of north Longford.

“We are looking forward to another great year,” explained Abbeylara Community Development committee member TJ Donohoe. “Every year we hold the Field Day as a way in which to raise funds for the parish,” he said, adding that people travel from all over the country to enjoy what Abbeylara has to offer on the day.

Sponsored by Crawford’s Bar and Josie and William Crawford Jnr, delights on the day include tractor pulling with tractors from 60 HP to 500 HP; vintage display of cars, tractors and motor bikes; auto jumble; dog show; wellie throwing; car boot sale; trap and pony rides and Best Dressed Lady competition.

“This year those in attendance will get to experience Ireland’s most powerful motor sport and truck pulling demonstration and there will also be modified Pro-Stock and super farm tractors on the day,” remarked Mr Donohoe. “A vintage parade has also been organised and will include a display featuring American cars and trucks. Also, and back by popular demand is the Midget Car Racing Championships which are being run in conjunction with Motor Sports Ireland.”

This year’s popular event, which has been running since 2008, also offers Field Day goers the opportunity to enjoy Grand Prix style Go-Karts; fun fair; bumping cars and bungee trampoline. There is also plenty of fun in store for all the kids with face painting, bounding castle and lots, lots more. The dog show is also back by popular demand, but be sure to register early as this event attracts dog lovers from all over the country, and the competition stakes are guaranteed to become very high on the day!

“Some of the tractors taking part in the Tractor Pulling event will be specially modified with turbos and intercoolers to make them even more powerful,” remarked Mr Donohoe.

Farm tractors are also invited to participate - this is a great event because the idea behind it, is that the tractor pulls a sleigh of various weights along a track and whoever pulls the furthest wins. There will also be ladies and gents Tug ‘O’ War, food stalls, stands and musical entertainment from 3pm.

Na Fianna, with special guest Olive Kilbane, will be on stage initially, and this will be followed by some wonderful traditional favourites from the very talented members of the Edgeworthstown Trad Group.

Weigh in starts at 9.30pm in Abbeylara next Sunday and there is also FREE car parking available. There will be toilets on site and all exhibitor’s will receive a memento and meal voucher. All proceeds in aid of parish funds and enquiries should be directed to (086) 8855189 or (086) 854 5378. Admission €10. Children FREE.
