The managing director of one of Longford town’s oldest shops has told the Longford Leader that the shop is not closing down and in fact, has recently hired a new staff member.

Eugene Kenny of E Kenny Ltd, the well-known clothing store on Main Street, was reacting to a rumour that has been widely circulated in recent weeks, which suggests the shop was on the verge of closing down.

“I don’t know how that rumour started, it’s untrue,” Mr Kenny said.

“We’ve now begun the research for our Autumn-Winter range and we’ll be attending trade shows at home and across Europe over the next while.”

Mr Kenny added that he has recently added to his workforce.

“Five people work at the shop, as well as myself, and the latest recruit only joined last November.”

E Kenny Ltd has been a fixture on Main Street for 90 years, and Eugene Kenny is the third generation of his family to operate the business.

Mr Kenny went on to say the conditions for local businesses are easing following the economic downturn.

“The period around 2010 and 2011 was bad because people just didn’t have the spending power,” he explained. “However, customers are more confident now. The worst of it seems to be over, and business is improving.”
