Rehearsals are going well for the St. Mel’s Musical Society production of Oklahoma! which opens in Backstage Theatre, on Saturday April 20th for a total of eight performances and playing the leading roles in the eagerly awaited show are Sean Rooney (Curley) and Kate Larkin (Laurey).
Living in Killoe, Sean (grandson of the late showband star Brian Harkin) made an impressive stage debut as Sky Masterson in the 2010 production of Guys and Dolls while Kate, daughter of local couple Gerry and Gaye Larkin (nee Harney), is a very talented newcomer to St. Mel’s Musical Society.
Winners of numerous National AIMS Awards in recent years after receiving a lot of nominations in the various categories, St. Mel’s Musical Society welcome back one of their most accomplished performers, Aideen Mulligan, who will feature in the role of Aunt Eller.
Also playing principal parts in Oklahoma! are Damien Bennett (Jud Fry), Emer Reynolds (Ado Annie), Jimmy Stenson (Will Parker), Doug Fox Roberts (Ali Hakim), John Kelly (Andrew Carnes) and Michelle Kelly Conlon (Gertie Cummings). Bennett from Killoe and Mohill native Stenson are other newcomers to St. Mel’s Musical Society.
Performing other roles in Oklahoma! are Justin Forde (Ike), Kevin Leavy (Flynn/Fred), Sinead Mullally (Vivienne), Sheena Keenan (Ellen), Laura Harte (Faye), Caoileann Bushell (Virginia) and Shauna Banahan (Sylvia) with a total cast of 34 who are working hard in their committed efforts to ensure yet another successful show for St. Mel’s Musical Society.
Oklahoma! is the Rodgers and Hammerstein traditional classic featuring many famous songs such as Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, I Can’t Say No, The Farmer and the Cowman, Poor Jud is Dead and the showstopper theme number Oklahoma!
The much loved musical is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy, and Jud, the hired farmhand. It tackles class issues between the farmers and the cowmen in the still-developing, rugged landscape of a state in its infancy as characters struggle to find hope, love and the fulfillment of “the American Dream”.
The Longford version of Oklahoma! will be performed in Backstage Theatre for a total of eight performances, opening on Saturday April 20th and will run until Sunday April 28th.
