In September 2011 two local community groups in Carrigallen, County Leitrim. These were the Margaret of New Orleans Group and the Bredagh Old School Heritage Committee. They were jointly engaged in a major peace building programme called ‘Integrating Communities’.

The programme is currently ongoing and is designed to facilitate community organisations. To work in partnership on a cross-community basis with a view to building relations and fostering increased integration at a local level.

It is delivered by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC) and funded by International Fund for Ireland.

The project is in the form of a joint drama production, and is entitled ‘The Other Place’. It tells the story of Margaret of New Orleans and Percy French who meet in a special place (The Other Place) and talk about their lives and their links and stories from the community of Carrigallen.

The play is written and directed by playwright, Maura Williamson. Cast involves children from four national schools in the area, Leitrim Youth Theatre Company, Carrigallen, and other members of this community.

As part of the process, people from the wider community have been brought together to engage in story-telling sessions about their knowledge of Percy and Margaret and the wider area.

The play is also enhanced with songs and poems written by Tony Fahy, all of which will be performed live at each event. Come along to what promises to be an excellent, entertaining and family-friendly event being staged at the Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen on Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th May at 8.30pm. Admission is free and bookings can be made on 049 4339612.
