There is much to look forward to in the coming days all over south Longford with Lanesboro and Ballyleague gearing itself up for an exciting festive season.
As well as all the usual great in-store offers locally, there are markets, carol singing and gatherings galore in the Shannonside towns in the coming days. The finishing touches are also currently being put together for the visit of Santa and the official switching on of the Christmas lights in Lanesboro as well as the installation of the much anticipated Christmas Tree in Ballyleague.
A Christmas Fair will also take place at St Mary’s Church in Lanesboro in a couple of week’s time, so any creative ideas that may be emerging from within could very well be utilised at the craft fair on the day. Last week, the Leader took a stroll out to Lanesboro to find out exactly what was going on over the next few weeks in the picturesque town and discovered that the indoor market at St Mary’s Community Centre was at the heart of the community, that particular day.
“The indoor markets used to be in the Co-Op but funding was pulled so we decided to set the markets up here at St Mary’s Community Centre,” Indoor Market, Co-Ordinator Breada O’Loughlin said. “Members of the Active Age come her every Friday and they gather together in a warm and cosy environment where they can have a cup of tea, a bite to eat and chat with each other about the week’s events. There is an array of stalls here as well, which provide food, clothing and much, much more.”
Sure enough, as one browses through the abundance of stalls at Lanesboro’s Indoor Market, all the very best in fresh foods, home-made breads and jams, jewellery, hand made cards and cookies as well as shining Brick-o-Brack, emerge, and it becomes easy to understand why the weekly event holds a special place in the hearts of so many people in the area. “It is a real centre part of the community here in Lanesboro and Ballyleague,” Ms O’Loughlin continued. “It’s on from 11am to 1:30pm every Friday and we have everything from flowers and jewellery to fresh foods and home baking. It is three years now since it began and really it is an initiative that has gone from strength to strength in that time. There is huge passing trade in Lanesboro and that helps us as well; but we have a great location here at St Mary’s Hall and there is car parking and wonderful views of the Shannon, so we have it all here!
This is a great place to come to for Christmas to get that special something and the Craft Fair on December 14 will have something for everyone – from the very young to the not so very young.”
