Backstage Theatre has a fantastic treat in store for music lovers this week with the show-stopping Under the Rainbow.
Featuring the hits ‘Mein Herr’, ‘New York, New York’, ‘Some People’, ‘Cabaret’, ‘Stepping Out’ and more, this show recaptures the life, trials and hits of the legendary Liza Minnelli and is a must for anyone who love great music and great drama.
Beneath the surface of sequin, feathers and razzle-dazzle that is so often associated with Miss Minnelli, lies a truly captivating character, who has lived one of the toughest, most fascinating and remarkable lives in show business.
Join Sharon Sexton’s Liza in the intimate setting of her dressing room as she performs pieces from her infamous musical catalogue and shares the secrets, stories and memories that make up a mesmerising career, including the memories of what was undoubtedly the most demanding role she ever played, that of being Judy Garland’s daughter.
An original script written by TG4’s Cillian O’Donnachadha (Glas Vegas, Seacht, Ros Na Run), an extract of this piece was the hit of the 2009 DIGTF Winter Festival Theatre Shorts.
Critics have said that Sharon Sexton has an uncanny resemblance to a young Liza is striking, but that it’s her capacity to get under the skin of her icon is her real skill.
“No one in fringe theatre can convince an audience that a superstar is plausibly playing…but having squeezed into this packed venue, I am almost certain I saw the ‘real thing,” said one critic. Under The Rainbow comes to Backstage Theatre, Longford this Saturday 28th at 8:30pm. Tickets €18/€16 available on 043 33 37888, from Farrell & Coy in Longford town or online on www.backstage.ie
