The recent death has occurred peacefully just before midnight at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen, having lived for 93 years on Friday, September 4, 2026 of Mrs Johanna “Joan” Maria Gilbert (née Reilly) Mohill, Co Leitrim.
In keeping with her last wishes Joan is to be repatriated to Mohill Co. Leitrim where she spent her formative years with her siblings Kathleen, Bernadette, Elizabeth, Mary Rose, Gerard and Ray. After leaving school my mother joined her older sister Kathleen in London where she worked in one of the Lyons Corner Houses and then as a book keeper. After marrying Gaston John Gilbert, she left London for Australia returning to the UK in 1965. She had two children Martin and Rita and when they were old enough she returned to part time work, the family moved from Bedfordshire to South Wales in 1985 where she worked in the care sector in Swansea. Johanna had a lifelong love of singing and even sang in Germany with her Amateur Operatics Society and then upon moving to South Wales joined local choirs. In addition to singing she loved walking and joined a ramblers society and was a devout Catholic throughout her life. Johanna Maria Gilbert is survived by her son and granddaughter. Rest in peace .
