Fine Gael's Micheál Carrigy stated having a class of more than 35 students as in Melview National School in Longford town.

A Longford TD has said three schools had up to three classes with more than 35 students during the past school year.

Fine Gael's Micheál Carrigy stated one of those was Melview National School in Longford town.

“Having a class of more than 35 students with a single teacher places significant pressure on teachers. It also directly impacts the quality of education being delivered to children," he added.

Deputy Carrigy said where schools have 'multiple classes with over 35 students, the challenge becomes even greater'.

He added: “The teacher-student ratio must be addressed. It’s not fair on either staff or students.

"Teachers need manageable class sizes to deliver effective teaching, and students deserve the opportunity to learn in an environment where they can receive the attention and support they need.

“I will be engaging directly with the Minister on this issue to ensure that teachers and students in Longford have the resources and classroom conditions necessary to teach and learn effectively.”
