The Christmas season is almost upon us, which means that it’s also nearly panto time in Longford.

From Friday 18th to Saturday 26th January in Backstage Theatre, Longford, Backstage Youth Theatre present their new pantomime, “Bo Peep”. Written by Brendan Williams and directed by Paul Higgins, the show is follows on from BYT’s previous success of “The Wizard of Longford” in 2011 and “Alex in Wonderland” earlier this year.

With a cast, chorus and crew in place, the group are very busy in preparation for the show next month and even at this stage, it’s clear to see the excitement building as we countdown the weeks until Bo Peep takes to the stage.

The plot involves Jack and Jill, who are in dire need of some hard cash, and so hatch a mischievous plan to steal the sheep belonging to Nursery-Rhyme land veteran, Bo Peep. However, they soon come to learn that these are no ordinary sheep.

On hearing this, Bo Peep enlists the help of Georgie Porgie, Miss Muffet and Yankee Doodle Dandy to recover her beloved sheep and so the chase is on!

The show itself features an array of colourful characters played by a selection of highly talented young people from the Longford area. The eight principal parts will be played by Sabina Dubiel (Jill), Zoe McGrath-Kane, (Jack), Marie Lynch, (Bo Peep), Caitlin Gray (Georgie Porgie), Conor Francis McLoughlin (King Cole), Carolyn Egan (Miss Muffet), Yankee Doodle Dandy (Rory Williams) and Claire Anne O’Reilly (Queen of Hearts).

With things well and truly underway, the show’s director Paul Higgins said the show is beginning to take shape.

“Backstage Youth Theatre have been very busy these last few weeks with rehearsals on four nights a week in preparation for Bo Peep. All the different aspects of the panto are being knitted together now in the run up to Christmas and we will spend the run up to the show polishing the performances,” he said.

“Our two choreographers have been working flat out devising their steps for the many dances and routines in the panto, and the cast and chorus have been keeping themselves good and warm learning them.

“Our voice coach has been tweaking the many songs we will be doing and we have just started working with our action coach on some of the more complex pieces,” he added.

He said tickets are going fast and to book in advance to avoid disappointment and suggested that a ticket to see Bo Peep would make a good stocking-filler.

“It’s all happening down in Nursery Rhyme land and we hope that santa brings you lots of things for Christmas but do make sure that a ticket for Bo peep is among the pressies. Dont be disappointed.”

‘Bo Peep’ features the crème de la crème of local talent and this show promises to be a laugh-a-minute with no shortage of singing, dancing and fun for all the family. The show runs for six performances in January 2013, at Backstage Theatre, Longford: Friday 18th - 8pm, Saturday 19th - 3pm, Sunday 20th - 3pm, Thursday 24th - 8pm, Friday 25th - 8pm & Saturday 26th - 3pm. Tickets are priced at €12 & €8 and are available from the Theatre Box Office on (043) 33 47888, www.backstage.ie and from Farrell Coy, Longford.
