Killoe’s Victor Connell was named as the overall Longford Person of the Year award winner 2016 at last night’s gala presentation banquet in the Longford Arms Hotel.
Organised by the Midlands Simon Community, in association with main sponsors Kiernan Structural Steel Limited and The Longford Leader, there were 600 entries submitted from members of the public for the awards and these were whittled down to a shortlist of eleven nominees, with Victor being an exceptionally popular overall winner.
Victor may not be comfortable with being labeled ‘inspirational’, however, his positivity and zest for life is infectious.
When doctors informed him “you’ll never move your arms or legs” following a serious rugby injury in October 2005, he opted to battle back and what he has achieved is remarkable.
In the past year he has not only collected his degree in Bachelor of Science in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Middlesex University, but he has also passed his driving test.
He is an inspirational figure and is also an important member of the team with the Longford Good2Talk project, as they seek to counter mental health issues, especially with the young. He is also a key member of the Longford rugby club.
