News Update 7 August

Here are the main stories in this week’s edition of the Longford Leader

A retired priest in Granard has been robbed for just 65 Euro. A woman was arrested and questioned by Gardai last Friday. She was subsequently released and a file was sent to the Direstor of Public Prosecutions.

Light touch regulation was blamed for the problems at the Gleann Riada estate, the local residents association heard last Wednesday. Cllr Peggy Nolan informed the residents that at the time of construction only 15 percent of a development was required to be inspected by the local authority. Councillors John Browne and Padraig Loughrey were also in attendence.

In sport we feature in-depth reports of last weekend’s championship action which saw Mullinalaghta and Abbeylara bounce back from first round defeats and Dromard and Colmcille play out a draw in a tetchy, low-scoring affair.

We also bring news of Derek Burnett’s performance at the 2012 Olympics where he finished in 27th place.
