Here are the latest headlines.

The ESB has defended its role in the disastrous flooding of the River Shannon in 2009 which submerged large tracts of land in Longford and Leitrim under water. The ESB Hydro Manager, Senan Colleran told Longford County Council that the ESB is not ultimately responsible if flooding occurs but he stressed that had the company not been in charge of Lough Allen at the time the flooding could have been even worse.

Lough Gowna’s Annemarie Lynch has been selected as New York Rose for 2012. A former student of Cnoc Mhuire, Granard, Annemarie wowed the judges in the States with her singing talents. Grainne Fox of the Longford Rose of Tralee committee described her as ‘an excellent ambassador for Longford.’ Annemanrie will move on to appear in the Rose of Tralee International festival this August.
