Sports Briefs

Torpedo’s travelled to Castlerea last weekend to try and get their season back to winning ways after losing badly to Carrick in the previous round. An away game against the one of the best teams in the league was not the ideal fixture for Coach Killane to get her team back on track.
The game was expected to be tight and for the first quarter it was. A nervous start by Torpedo’s let the home team go ahead by 7 points, but a well called time-out settled the players down and some great defence led to a few easy scores for Torpedo’s and both teams were level at the end of the first quarter, 15 points each.
From then it was really all Torpedo’s. Castlerea had no answer for Torpedo’s high pressure defence. And on offence, a combination of fast breaks and well worked passing moves led to some easy scores for the away team. Time after time Torpedo’s quick passing opened up the Castlerea defence for an open layup or an uncontested shot and, unlike last week, the Torpedo players were shooting well from outside.
All in all coach Killane can be reasonably happy with the team’s performance. There are always things to improve, but if the team can play that high intensity defence and controlled offence for the rest of the season then there should be no reason why Torpedo’s cannot be fighting for top spot.
