Bunlahy native Willie Dempsey, who was last week entered into the Eastern New York State Soccer Association Hall of Fame on Saturday last.

A former resident of north Longford was inducted into the Eastern New York State Soccer Association Hall of Fame on Saturday evening last.

Willie Dempsey, from Coolarty, currently serves as President of New York Irish Rovers who are ranked the second most succesful club in the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) since its inception in 1948. He was nominated by the LISFL in honour of his years as both a player and as a coach with Rovers. He is the first Long Island inductee since 2010.

Living in New Hyde Park, Long Island, Wille has been a fixture of the club for over 30 years. He recently led Rovers’ reserve side to an historic second successive LISFL league and cup double along with 10 New York State Championships, one Manning Cup victory, 20 Long Island League titles, 24 Long Island Cups and six sportsmanship awards. He has also served as a member of the technical staff of Team Ireland who take part in the annual New York based Cosmos Copa tournament.

Willie’s achievements as both player and coach rank as one of the greatest in the history of amateur soccer in the US capital.
