Melview NS Boys win EA Sports soccer title
The Longford Finals of the EA Sports FAI 5-a-side Primary Schools Soccer took place in Flancare Park last week. Newtownforbes, being the only large school in the competition, automatically qualified to represent Longford in the North Leinster Finals of the Girls B Cup.
The boys and girls who played certainly did their schools proud on a day that was perfect for football.
In the first final of the day Boys A Cup (small schools) Abbeylara were the winners defeating Drumlish 2–1 after a keenly contested game. The second final was between Drumlish and Melview in the Girls A Cup. The Drumlish girls were very strong and skillful and secured a 2-0 lead at half-time.
The Melview girls fought back bravely and forced the Drumlish keeper into a number of saves before Drumlish scored their third with a fast break out of defence. Drumlish went on to record a comfortable win.
The third final was a very close affair with Melview playing Killoe in the Boys B Cup. Melview had a great start when Daniel Smith passed to Patrick O'Shaughnessy who dribbled up the left wing before picking a lovely pass to Kevin Maloney who made no mistake in finding the net.
Killoe gradually got into the game and forced an equaliser from a well executed corner. Both teams created chances with Killoe dominating the aerial exchanges. However, Ben Ryan made a couple of great saves to keep Melview in the game.
In the second half Brian Sweeney hit a great volley just over the bar while Rory O'Brien was narrowly wide with a great effort from close range. Finally Melview got the breakthrough their play merited when another excellent passing movement was once again finished to the net by Kevin Maloney.
Killoe piled on the pressure to get back into the game but some sterling defensive work from Peter Hanley, Ryan O’Keeffe and Daniel Smith ensured a Melview victory.
All the winning teams will go on to represent Longford in the North Leinster finals in the JJB stadium in Dundalk on Wednesday May 13th. They will do well to emulate last year's representatives Colmcille Boys and Ballinamuck Girls who went all the way to the All-Ireland finals. Best of luck to all teams. Thanks to Robbie Stokes who refereed the finals and to Longford Town FC for the use of their facilities.
