Longford lose out by a single point away to Waterford

Longford ladies made the four hour trip to Fraher Field, Dungarvan on Sunday last to take on Waterford in Division 3 of the National Football League. This was always going to be a difficult task as the home county had won their previous three games.

Despite travelling with just seventeen players with four of our girls tied up with Leaving Cert mocks and a late withdrawal by one of their prominent players, Longford made a gallant bid to bring Waterford's unbeaten run to an end and went within a minute of causing an upset only to be denied at the end.

Longford won the toss and elected to play with the strong breeze but Waterford were first to score through a Michelle Ryan free.

Edel Quinn levelled matters on 8 mins and Denise Murtagh put Longford into the lead with a long range free after Orla Noonan was fouled.

However two points in succession from Linda Wall and Michelle Ryan put Waterford back in front but then Longford played the best football of the half when Denise Murtagh scored 1-2 and Edel Quinn scored a goal with a great move from the full-back-line started by Yvonne Barden and carried forward by Michelle Ross who found Quinn inside to blast the ball to the net.

Waterford replied with 1-2 before half-time from Elaine Power (0-1), Louise Ryan (1-1) to leave the half-time score 3-4 to 1-5 in favour of the visitors. Longford defended bravely in the second half but against the strong wind could only manage two points from Una Flynn and Denise Murtagh but what a great effort was put in under the circumstances.

Waterford scored eight points in the second half to win by the minimum of margins but Longford will be hoping to get back on the winning trail against Fermanagh in Enniskillen this weekend.

LONGFORD: Lorraine McCloughrey; Clara Melia, Yvonne Barden, Antoinette Brady; Marie Brady, Michelle Ross, Donna Leavy; Siobhan McGowan, Elizabeth Brady; Anne Marie Bratten, Denise Murtagh (2-3), Orla Noonan; Anna McDonnell, Edel Quinn (1-2), Una Flynn (0-1).

Subs:- Mary Kiernan for U Flynn (40 mins); Michelle Kilkenny.

Away to Fermanagh

In the National League Fermanagh are a big test for Longford who make the journey to Enniskillen on Saturday next, March 13th. A win will ease the qualification prospects for the Longford girls but as with every clash between these counties it will go right down to the wire so an intriguing encounter is in prospect. With the return of the exam tied girls it should strengthen the squad and a win will bring Longford level on points with Fermanagh.
