Longford runner Siobhan McHugh was one of hundreds of competitors to take on the gruelling Great Wall of China Marathon last month, securing the third fastest female time overall.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s most imposing races, Siobhan took just 4:30:44 to complete the 26 mile course and winning widespread acclaim in the process.

“It was a fantastic race and really challenging to climb the wall for the second time”, said the proud runner after receiving the medal and prize after the race. “The combination of running on the wall, through small villages and with lots of happy Chinese children along the road was a great sight.”

Voted as being amongst the world’s top ten most spectacular races, the course has more than 5,000 steps along its wall with temperatures regularly exceeding 30C.

“When Siobhan came in, she looked so comfortable and more than capable of doing the marathon all over again,” said one of Siobhan’s close friends, Mary Carter.

A mother of three, Siobhan is at the moment residing in China with her husband and is currently working for Shanghai based firm, Merck Pharmaceuticals.
