Wide open Intermediate Championship starts this weekend

Mulleady Group 2012 Intermediate Football Championship Round 1

The eight Intermediate clubs in the county will battle it out for the Gerry Hennessy Cup – Ardagh St. Patrick’s, Ballymore, Carrickedmond, Cashel, Granard St. Mary’s, Kenagh, Rathcline and Young Grattans – and the second tier championship starts this weekend.

Five of those teams were relegated from the Senior Championship last season and thus the quest for the county title in the wide open Intermediate grade this year will be extremely competitive, to say the least.

The most intriguing game in the first round is the meeting of Granard St. Mary’s and Carrickedmond, the losers of which will be under pressure to reach the knock-out stages, and the same applies to Rathcline and Ardagh St. Patrick’s in their Round 1 showdown.

Cashel will start their championship campaign with high hopes of beating Ballymore who have suffered the bitter disappointment of losing the Intermediate final in 2010 and 2011 while a tight game is in prospect between Young Grattans and Kenagh in the remaining first round fixture.

In the new format (much the same as the senior grade) there will be an Open Draw for 3 separate rounds in the 2012 Intermediate Championship. The Open Draw for Round 2 cannot be made until the first round games are played (and so on) and when this section of the championship (3 rounds of fixtures) is eventually complete, the teams filling the top four places in the league table will qualify for the semi-finals.

In the event of teams finishing on the same number of points in the league table, scores difference will apply to determine the final positions or the head-to-head result if required.

The semi-finals draw will then work out as follows:

Team 1 v Team 4

Team 2 v Team 3

The bottom four teams in the league table will end up in the relegation play-offs and the draw will work out as follows:

Team 5 v Team 8

Team 6 v Team 7

The losers of these two games will then meet in the relegation final, the loser of which will be relegated to the 2013 Junior Championship.
