Scoil Mhuire, Longford fall at the final hurdle

After winning the All-Ireland U-16 ‘A’ title last season, Scoil Mhuire Secondary School were attempting to capture another title but the Longford side fell at the final hurdle in the Ladies Leinster Post-Primary Schools Senior ‘B’ decider at the windswept Kinnegad grounds on Thursday last.
They found the going far too tough against a stronger Scoil Mhuire team from Trim who held a decisive edge in most positions on the pitch and particularly outstanding was roving right-corner-forward Laura Dempsey who scored a goal and five points.
There was just no stopping Dempsey who inflicted most of the damage throughout this one-sided encounter and it could have been even worse for Longford’s Scoil Mhuire but for a few fine saves by their excellent goalkeeper Shannon Woods.
While the gallant losers made a bright start and might have been awarded a penalty when full-forward Keri Harmon appeared to be fouled in her attempt to score a goal in the early stages of the game, Trim took over completely thereafter with the aid of the strong wind and had established a commanding 2-5 to 0-1 lead by the 20th minute.
Their opening goal was rather fortunate as after Shannon Woods had made a terrific point-blank save to keep out a shot from opposing full-forward Shona White, the ball broke kindly to the completely unmarked Aoife Minogue who found the empty net with 11 minutes gone on the clock.
