Qualifier Draw schedueled for Monday
The draw for the first round of the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Qualifiers will be broadcast live on RTE Radio One’s Morning Ireland programme this Monday during their 8.35am sports bulletin.
Longford, after their agonising loss to Wesford in Tullamore last Sunday, will be amongst the names in the hat. Unlike some previous years when teams were precluded from being drawn against sides they had already met in the provincial championship until a much later stage, Longford could face any one of the other fifteen sides in the draw. This means a rematch with Laois is a possibility. Justin McNulty’s side, somewhat gallingly, enter the All-Ireland series at the exact same stage as Longford despite their loss in Pearse Park last month. This could spark unhappy memories of Longford’s miserably abject loss to Westmeath at the same stage and in similar circumstances in 2007.
The teams already in the hat are Antrim, Cavan, Fermanagh, Armagh, London, Roscommon, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Longford, Louth, Wicklow and Laois. The losers of the three provincial quarter-finals still to be played - Derry-Donegal, Kildare-Offaly and the Meath-Carlow replay - will also find themselves in the hat.
Longford will be hoping to avoid Armagh and the losers of the Derry-Donegal tie. However, they will fancy their chances against whoever else they might meet, particularly if they manage to secure a home draw.
The games will be played on Saturday 30 June with throw-in times and venues to be decided by the CCCC next week.
