Longford U-21s get Hastings Cup campaign off to flying start

Ronan Keogh clears the danger for Longford against Leitrim at the Ardagh grounds on Saturday last in the first round of the Hastings Cup U-21 Football Competition.

Backboned by quite a few of the team that reached the Leinster Championship final last year, the current Longford U-21 squad will be hoping to achieve another extended run in the race for the provincial title this season and the preparation continued with a comfortable win over Leitrim in Round 1 of the Hastings Cup Tournament at Keenan Park, Ardagh on Saturday last.

Padraic Davis is back in charge and the other members of the same U-21 management team are Eugene McCormack, Cathal Conefrey and Pete McWade who will be satisfied enough with the performance against Leitrim despite some poor finishing, particularly so in the first half when the home county were guilty of kicking around seven wides.

With tougher tasks to come in the Hastings Cup against Roscommon and Cavan, there is still plenty of room for improvement in the build-up to the Leinster Championship quarter-final clash away to Louth or Kilkenny, a midweek floodlit fixture scheduled for Wednesday March 7th.

While Longford should probably have beaten Leitrim by a wider margin last weekend, such was their general superiority, only a solitary point separated the sides before Mark Hughes fired home a well-taken goal just before the break.
