Longford take control in the second half to overcome Cavan

Longford’s promotion credentials were given a timely shot in the arm last Saturday evening as Glenn Ryan’s charges maintained their 100 per cent unbeaten record in Division 3 of the National Football League when seeing off a below par Cavan side at Kingspan Breffni Park.
The win, which followed hot on the heels of the midlanders facile victory over Offaly just six days earlier, came largely on foot of a strong second half performance as Cavan slumped to their second league defeat in succession.
And in truth, the three point margin that separated the sides at the end could have been far greater had Longford turned some of their 13 wides into scores. Much of the credit no doubt will go to star forward Sean McCormack, who grabbed four of his sides ten points.
However, when messrs Ryan, Davis and company sit down and examine matters this week, they will undoubtedly point to the introduction of James McGivney and Donal McElligott at half-time as key catalysts in swinging the game in the visitors favour.
Both attackers played a starring role in galvanising last season’s Division Four league champions following the break which saw Longford trail their near neighbours by 0-4 to 0-3.
Played under floodlights and in front of a meagre crowd, it was Longford who started the better with Sean McCormack and Paul Barden firing over the bar within the opening five minutes.
