Leitrim score narrow win over Carlow

Leitrim had to fight like tigers at the end to defeat Carlow in a nail biting finish to Sunday’s thrilling Division 4 game in Dr. Cullen Park where the visitors collected their first league points this season.

Carlow levelled the game with six minutes to play and after that had three chances with which to snatch victory from play by Daragh Foley, a free by Brian Murphy and again from play by substitute Eoghan Ruth.

Meanwhile Leitrim managed to make two successful forays in to the Carlow half during this period and grabbed the lead with a well-taken Ray Cox point in the first minute of injury time and then James Glancy (Glencar/Manorhamilton) hit over a free from 45metres at the death to make victory secure.

It was even pegging in the first four minutes with Gerry Hickey converting a Leitrim free after James Glancy was fouled and Sean Gannon responding with a Carlow point from play after receiving a pass from Derek Hayden.

Hickey put Leitrim back in front with a 6th minute point from play after he was put through from a James Glancy free while two minutes later Hickey again hit the target when punishing a foul on Glancy.

Meanwhile Carlow got back on level terms by the 12th minute when Ed Finnegan shot over from play after receiving a pass from Darragh Foley while Daniel St. Leger also slotted over a 45 metre free.

Leitrim got their noses in front again within the space of two more minutes after James Glancy delivered a long range kick pass from midfield to Ray Cox on the edge of the  Carlow ‘square’ and he blasted the ball to the net.

Glancy improved Leitrim’s advantage with a point from play after a low trajectory Darren Sweeney hit 45 metre free reached Glancy. But Carlow fought back and reduced the Leitrim lead to the minimum by the 26th minute.
