Killoe’s McCormack ready to go

Killoe Young Emmets captain Joe McCormack is relishing the prospect of playing in his first County Final on Sunday. Speaking to the Leader McCormack is delighted that the club are finally back in a senior title decider after a 17 year wait.
“To be honest it’s a long time coming. For a club who have been producing some great footballers over the years with minors, under 16s and under 14s all winning county titles it was inevitable that it was going to happen at some stage at senior level. I’m delighted that we have reached the final and it’s a brilliant feeling.”
The current Killoe squad have shown a lot of promise in recent years and many are not surprised that they are through to the final. McCormack admitted that although the talent is there it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that Killoe would make it: “There has been a lot of talk about this Killoe team and the ability that’s within the squad. But it’s not an easy job to get to a county final. We got some experience last year with the run we had and we got across the line this year. We had a very tough battle between Abbeylara in the quarter-final and against Dromard it was a dogfight on both days.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s game the Young Emmets captain Joe is aware of the stern test that lies ahead; facing the title holders and a side going for three-in-a-row. “We know the talent that Slashers have in their squad. They have a great management team and they are playing a great system of football. They are county champions for the last two years. It’s take a great team to win three-in-a-row and Slashers will be hoping to achieve that. But we’re there and we deserve to be there too. To be honest there is not a lot between the clubs in the county; just a kick of a ball. On Sunday it’s going to be a tough affair too.”
Killoe are hoping to emulate their Ladies team and claim the Senior title. It has been a great year for the club as a whole, according to McCormack: “Our ladies won their county senior final a few weeks ago and I would love if we did the same.
There is a lot of hard work done behind the scenes with Frank Kiernan and Gerry Rowley and the rest of the lads with the amount of effort they put in. I’m delighted for everyone involved and hopefully we will bring the Connolly Cup back to the parish.”
